As the bad-taste jokes surrounding Apple’s iPad slowly fade away and the countdown to the March launch begins, a UK company has announced a competing product with the name many thought Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) would use. X2 Computing, which specializes in handheld devices, especially ruggedized devices, is calling its new computer the iTablet.

… verdict has to be put into the context of all the hype. Had Apple called this device the “iPod touch 2,” I would have praised it as a really good follow-up to an excellent product. I would have still questioned whether there is a market for a device that’s too big to put in your pocket but not as easy to type on as a laptop, but I would have given Apple the benefit of the doubt, just as I did with Lenovo.

Web designers — and a fair number of Web users — noticed something missing from Steven P. Jobs’s demonstration of the Apple iPad Wednesday. On some of the Web sites he displayed on the tablet computer’s screen, blank squares appeared where video or animated content would normally be displayed.
