Looking for Theft Protection for Your MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, or any of the MacBooks? MacTrak is the Answer
GadgetTrak has a great new product for our Mac computers. MacTrack is advanced anti-theft software for OS X which uses a Wi-Fi positioning system and Flickr integration to help you recover your system if it is stolen. I call it LoJack for my Mac.
MacTrack will work on almost any Apple computer running OS X, mac pro, macbook, macbook air, and macbook pro it will even work on the macbook nano.
I installed it on my MacBook. It was easy to install and now I sleep better at night knowing if my MacBook is stolen I will be able to recover it in no time at all.
The installation couldn’t be any easier:
I ran the installer and rebooted my system. I then entered my license key and an an email address and a password.

They warn against using a .Mac account or any email account that comes directly to the protected computer.
Then I set up my Flickr account integration.

The flickr integration is one of the really cool parts of the tracking software.
I then rebooted the system and MacTrack was installed.
Now the really fun stuff:
I get to set the preferences and test it!

I opened System Preferences and loaded the GadgetTrack Preferences pane.

Now to test a theft:
I logged on the the GadgetTrack for Mac activation page, entered my email address and password I entered earlier and…

The “Tracking Disabled” button then came up.

I enabled tracking by clicking on the “Tracking Disabled” button.

The button turned red and then said “Tracking Active”.
The MacTrack was now active. I could either logout and back in, or wait 30 minutes and GadgetTrack would start sending me emails with photos captured to the email address I had entered earlier as well as to my Flickr account.
This is an example of what the Flickr information looks like.

The report from GadgerTrack includes the wi-fi based location data that had been collected, the latitude and longitude coordinates, accurate within 10-20 meters in urban areas and 100 meters in suburban areas.
GadgetTrack has one warning:
The data collected and images captured are to assist law enforcement with the recovery of your device. NEVER ATTEMPT TO RETRIEVE THE DEVICE ON YOUR OWN.
GadgetTrak even has a version for your iPhone and iPod Touch that is now available from the iTunes App Store.
