CronoSyncI use 2 hard drives for my clients (well actually 3). I use a portable hard drive so I can make changes when I am not in the office to any of my clients files. I also use one external hard drive for the main clients drive where all of my clients files reside it remains in the office/studio. I also have a backup drive in the office/studio that backs up all the information on this clients drive.

Problem: I want to be able to synchronize the files on both the portable and static client drives. I would like to be able to update the clients files from either drive and have them sync with each other. I just want to be at ease with the files I have taken great pains to create and update.

Programs I have used in the past (no I won’t mention them) have corrupted the files on both drives and caused all kinds of problems. I just downloaded the files from the backup and had to start all over again.

Solution: CronoSync! I have used this program from Econ Technologies for just over a day and I am overjoyed. This is the syncing program I have been looking for. I have been searching for a solution for over 2 years now.

Free as a LIMUG BirdIn the past I solved it by using only one clients drive and lugging it around with me where ever I thought I might need to use it. Now I feel as free as a bird.

CronoSync was an easy to use program to download, install, setup, and use.

After I downloaded and installed CronoSync I needed to set it up. This was straight forward. You just follow the instructions in the window.

CronoSync setup
I got to choose whether I wanted to use CronoSync for backup or synchronizing, which files or folders I wanted to use, and even gave me warnings as to where the problems were likely to occur.

Next I initialized the analyze feature of CronoSync.

CronoSync analyze

From this window I was able to exclude any files and/or folders that didn’t I never wanted to sync. (or backup if that was what I was looking for)

I was also given the chance to schedule the synchronization on a regular basis.

CronoSync schedule

Because I was using one of the hard drives with my MacBook I didn’t use this feature. They have another program that solved this scheduling problem it is called CronoAgent. CronoAgent will actually sync my drives when I connect to my network. 8-) eh! But that is another post.

I even got a ChronoSync icon in my Mac toolbar for easy access to the program.CronoSync in Mac toolbar

For only $40 I think this program is a bargain. I just wish I had found it years ago.

According to Econ Technologies

ChronoSync is the complete data management utility that allows you to efficiently synchronize or backup files and folders from one disk location to another. There are hundreds of settings available within each Synchronizer document to customize your synchronizations. You can synchronize or backup files to almost any device. ChronoSync will even automatically mount other computers. Create as many documents as you need to handle all the synchronization and backup scenarios you have.

  • Synchronize
Whether you work on more than one computer or need to share files with someone on another computer, ChronoSync can handle it. Work on your laptop and sync. All of your files are copied over to your desktop. When you switch back, just sync and your changed files are copied back over to your laptop
  • Back Up
If you modify files on your source only and need a redundant copy on your destination, then you would need a back up copy of your files. Whatever you want to back up your Mac to, ChronoSync can handle it
  • Bootable
Besides backing up all your files, a bootable backup allows you to boot directly into the backup so you can run your Mac from the backup
  • Archive
Save old versions of your files in case you need to go back in time. Instead of just deleting files, ChronoSync saves deleted and modified files by storing them in an archive folder
  • Schedule
The most powerful aspect of ChronoSync is scheduling. Create multiple synchronizer documents and schedule them separately or combine them in a ChronoSync Container to schedule them together
  • Analyze
Compare your data before and after every synchronization, utilizing the Analyze panel, running trial synchronizations, and viewing detailed printed logs
  • Connect
Synchronize or backup to almost any device. ChronoSync can even automatically mount other computers
  • Filter Data
Filtering gives you the flexibility to only copy files or folders you want from any set of data

ChronoSync version 4.0 requires 50 MB in disk space to install. ChronoSync requires that you run an installer and enter your Admin User and password because ChronoSync must be installed at root level. ChronoSync must be stored in the Applications or Utilities folder to run properly. ChronoSync runs on Tiger (Mac OS 10.4), Leopard (Mac OS 10.5) and Snow Leopard (Mac OS 10.6). You might say it’s cross-catform!

Older versions that run on Panther (Mac OS 10.3) are available on request.
